Did you know?

SHaLA stands for the Stanford Health and Lifestyle Assessment. It is an internationally renowned assessment that is now available to STRIVE members!

STRIVE initially took form at the Stanford School of Medicine, Center for Research in Disease Prevention. Originally entitled “Project SSTRIVE” (Seniors Strength Training for Independence, Vitality and Energy), *it was conceived and implemented in the early 1990’s by one of our Founding Partners, Dr. Wayne Phillips. Since that time, STRIVE has been broadened and refined to meet the needs of today’s older adult community, but we have not forgotten where we came from. We continue to work with Stanford University to promote better health - as part of our combined initiatives, all STRIVE members will have access to the Stanford Health and Lifestyle Assessment. This online assessment takes just a few minutes to complete but the results can be life changing.

STRIVE & Stanford University are both committed to supporting active, healthy lifestyles – we recognize what you do outside the STRIVE program is just as important as what you do inside. Adopting a healthier approach to your life will support and build upon the benefits you gain from STRIVE.

The Stanford Health and Lifestyle Assessment (SHaLA) is an evidence-based online health assessment designed by the internationally renowned Stanford University Health Promotion Resource Center. Developed around the recommendations of the Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, the SHaLA takes a much more positive, practical and useable approach than the typical “Health Risk Appraisal”. Rather than simply identifying “risk factors” that need to be reduced, SHaLA identifies links between improved health and lifestyle behaviors that you are able to change

As a STRIVE member you will receive a comprehensive and understandable analysis of your SHaLA results as well as the opportunity to discuss these results individually with one of our highly trained wellness coaches or counselors. Taking the SHaLA as part of our STRIVE program will not only give you great insight into your potential areas of improvement but will also provide concrete evidence of your progress during your participation in the program.
